Bellator 301: Two New Champions Crowned

Published on 23 November 2023 at 20:00

The Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois hosted Bellator 301 to witness a new Bantamweight champion in the Co-Main Event and an upset title victory in the Main Event. Both Patchy Mix and Jason Jackson won in spectacular style with both men becoming the kings of their own weight division. Here is what happened in the two title fights.

Sergio Pettis (c) vs Patchy Mix (Bantamweight Championship Bout) - Mix wins via Submission (R2, 1:51).

Patchy Mix was seen as the betting favourite ahead of this title fight. With a five-fight winning streak, 'No Love' had the opportunity to become the new King of the Bantamweights. Sergio Pettis was surprisingly seen as the underdog of the fight despite previously defending his Bantamweight title successfully against current Featherweight and former Lightweight Bellator champion, Patricio 'Pitbull' Freire, at Bellator 297.

In the first round, Mix was in a dominant position after gaining a lot of control time with 'The Phenom' struggling to get to his feet.

The second round would go in Patchy Mix's favour except with a delightful ending for the New-York fighter. He took the back of Pettis before submitting him with a Rear-Naked Choke to become the undisputed champion.

Patchy's championship victory makes it his 13th Submission win of his career as seven of his nine fights have ended with a finish. Questions will be asked of the new champion's next opponent as the Bantamweight division now recognises their new biggest threat of the division.

Yaroslov Amosov (c) vs Jason Jackson (Welterweight Championship Bout) - Jackson wins via TKO (R3, 2:08).

It was expected that Yaroslav Amosov would be the favourite heading into the main event and to keep his unbeaten record of 27 wins. Amosov's last two title victories ended by unanimous decision. This was a common predicted result as Jason Jackson's last six victories all came by unanimous decision as well. Despite not being undefeated in his career, Jackson was unbeaten in Bellator which is what would give 'Dynamo' a good competition.

During the first and second round, Amosov would try and take the fight to the ground but the Jamaican fighter was able to defend the takedowns and keep the fight standing.

The third round is what was gradually the beginning of the end for the Ukrainian as while Jackson was opening up on his striking; he landed a clean knee and uppercut to the champion, knocking him down and forcing the referee to stop the fight after Jason continued punching to finish the fight.

Not only did Jason Jackson become the Bellator Welterweight champion, but he became the first fighter to have defeated Yaroslav Amosov as he did it in spectacular style which is what made it such a big upset victory.

Who will Jason Jackson's first title defence be against? Who will Patchy Mix face next in the Bantamweight division as champion?
