Sandhagen makes big statement win in Iowa

UFC Des Moines provided the Fargo Wells Arena with some wild knockouts and gave some surprises which many would not expect. Here is everything that happened in front of the thunderous Iowa crowd.

Preliminary card

The event started off with Juliana Miller redeeming her two-fight losing streak as she defeated Ivana Petrovic by unanimous decision.

It then carried on with a dominant display from Thomas Petersen who won by unanimous decision as his wrestling was no match for Don'Tale Mayes.

Quang Le had the pleasure of earning the first stoppage win of the night, defeating Gaston Bolanos by technical submission with a Rear-Naked Choke in the second round and claiming his first win in the UFC.

Gillian Robertson rises to the top 10 in the Strawweight rankings after stopping Marina Rodriguez by second-round TKO, forcing the Brazilian to retire at 38 years old with seven wins and two draw in the organisation.

Azamat Bekoev earned back-to-back first-round TKO wins, stopping Ryan Loder and making himself a promising prospect in the Middleweight division as he currently stands on an eight-fight winning streak.

The prelims ended off with former UFC Featherweight title challenger, Yana Santos, becoming victorious as her first two rounds was a good enough performance to go the distance and win by unanimous decision against Miesha Tate.

Main card

The main card kicked off with a gruelling war as Mason Jones came out on top to win by unanimous decision in enemy territory against the returning Jeremy Stephens.

Serhey Sidey went to the judges scorecards with Cameron Smotherman to win by unanimous decision as his well-rounded performance was enough to convince the judges, making it his second consecutive win inside the Octagon.

Montel Jackson maintained his #15 contender's spot in the Bantamweight rankings with an unanimous decision win, becoming the first fighter to defeat Daniel Marcos.

Daniel Rodriguez earned his first knockout win since July 2021 as he stopped Santiago Ponzinibbio in the third round to start his winning streak and kick off 2025 with success.

Reinier de Ridder made sure to let everyone know that he is a big threat in the Middleweight division after stopping prospect, Bo Nickal, by second-round TKO as he was no match on the feet for the Dutchman.

Finally, in the main event, Cory Sandhagen made it clear what he wants next after stopping Deiveson Figueiredo by second-round TKO, despite the Brazilian suffering a knee injury during a scramble, as he sets his sights on facing the winner of the Bantamweight title bout at UFC 316 between Merab Dvalishvili and Sean O'Malley.

 

Next Saturday, UFC 315 shines in the headlines in Montreal as Canadian fans will lay witness to two title fights which include, Welterweight Champion, Belal Muhammad, defending his belt against the #5 contender, Jack Della Maddalena, and Valentina Shevchenko will defend her title against the #2 contender, Manon Fiorot, in her second reign as Flyweight Women's Champion.
